Back O' Th' Moss Area > >

The name Back O' Th' Moss describes to perfection exactly where this area of Heywood lies. On some of the oldest maps in the archives, the name is there, showing an area of rich farmland at the back of an uncultivated boggy area.
Any links with agricultrue have long gone, though. Just before the Second World War it was seen as the perfect spot for a sprawling new council estate and in recent times, the estate has been undergoing the biggest regeneration since it was built.
It has a vibrant community centre and residents' group - and it has the countryside quite literally at its doorstep. Work has begun to restore the Roch Valley, in a steep ravine behind the estate.
