Crowds packed into the Phoenix Centre to admire the brand new £7.3M health and council services facility. Visitors to the centre joined Coronation Street favourite Katherine Kelly, dignitaries and health professionals at an open day on Saturday 15 November.
The open day, which coincided with Heywoods Annual Health Fair at the Civic Centre, followed the Official Opening by Baroness Kay Andrews OBE, chairman of English Heritage, who was delifghted to return to Heywood after cutting the first sod for the centre in 2008.
Hundreds of visitors watched presentations from officials, took tours around the new facility and chatted with Miss Kelly, who plays 'Becky Macdonald' in the long running soap.
The Mayor of Rochdale, Councillor Keith Swift, said "I'm delighted with the hard work and cooperation that has gone into making this joint service centre a reality, bringing both NHS and council services together in one place. Its something the town can be really proud of, and i'm very pleased to see the first joint service in the borough is here in Heywood."
Exhibitors at both the Phoenix and Civic Centres offered help and advice on a range of council and health services, including healthy eating, while the Heywood Health Trainers provided free health checks.
Miss Kelly played a competitive game of football with a group of youngsters and tried out one of the Phoenix Centres new computers, which offers free Internet access and council services.
Groups including Liza Jayne's Dance Academy also wowed the audiences at the Civic Centre.
John Pierce, chairman of NHS Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale said "With the support of the local community, our vision for Heywood has now become a reality, providing modern 21st century facilities and services for the people of Heywood."
Susan Coates, chairman of New Heart for Heywood added "As everyone can see today, the facilities are superb and this is an excellent example of what can be achieved by working in Partnership.
