Heywood Sports, Culture and Leisure Village > >

Over the last two years, there has been extensive consultation with people in Heywood about proposals to create a Sports, Culture and Leisure Village on the site of Heywood Sports Complex at West Starkey Street.

A Steering Group of local people, including NDC Resident Directors, Link4Life and a Community Champion along with other main partners, has been planning the project and listened to what people have said is needed in the town.

Funding for the new £10.3 million Heywood Sports Village project is now firmly in place and work commenced on site in June 2009 with an anticipated opening date of September 2010.

The decision has now been made to build a completely new purpose-built centre instead of 'enveloping' the existing Jack Talbot Sports Hall. This new building will be located on a site behind the existing Gaskell Pool.

The existing pool and sports hall will remain open during the construction period and this will help to minimise disruption to Heywood Sports Complex's existing customers.

Rochdale Council and New Heart for Heywood have expressed their support for the project by agreeing more than £2million and £4million respectively for, with other funding coming via £1 million from the Football Foundation, along with North West Development Agency and Sport England.

Link4Life will continue to manage the new Centre under the terms of its Agreement with Rochdale Borough Council. Craig McAteer, Managing Director of the Trust said, "This is excellent news for Heywood people and it will now be our priority to continue to consult with all stakeholders to make sure, through its design and operation, that the new centre meets the needs of all its users."

New Heart for Heywood NDC is funded as part of the Department for Communities and Local Governments ten year, £2billion New Deal for Communities programme. Each NDC’s priorities are determined by a board, of which elected residents form a significant part. New Heart for Heywood NDC was established in 2001.
